College Portfolio Preparation

This is the long requested, perfect class for college bound students who desire guidance and dedicated studio time. Create portfolios worthy of college/grad school entrance with expert critique and guidance from Jim Hastings, Kansas City Grad Kansas City Grad with an MA in Art Ed from UNT Bring your list of specific projects or we can guide you towards making art that integrates your style with beautiful, solid work. Some supplies included and all model fees.

Pre-Portfolio Class

We call this our Pre-Portfolio class because it is the introduction to our ‘Portfolio Class’. This summer class is superb for easing the young artist towards the rigorous workload presented in our special program that starts in fall for any high-school bound student who needs a FABULOUS portfolio. It’s basically a college level presentation of exercises that become beautiful works of art. This class is only for the most serious young artists. A great way to decide if charting a course towards auditioning for an Arts Magnet is right for your family, or perhaps another great high school art program in the city who likes to see a portfolio with audition. Independent Study

Great as a resource/lab to work towards a well balanced Portfolio or to dedicate time to complete summer Arts homework. Or use this class as an escape from summer doldrums. One Mom reported that it was great for her kid to have a ‘routine he liked’ in the summer for just that little extra bit of support and community. We will be combining several kids with different concentrations - some in clay, some in drawing, and so on. Whatever your area of interest, you will find excellent critiques and assistance as you create projects and study areas that enhance your artistic growth.

Oil Painting

We will investigate specific techniques of using water based oil paint, encouraging the student to express themselves in their own paintings while developing use of color, value, design and composition. New projects every year! Supply list provided first day of class - purchase kit from Asel Art Supply.

Teens

Mudworks – The Class

Get your hands dirty! Learn a variety of ceramic techniques (coil, slab, extruding, wheel, pinch) to create beautiful and useful objects. A great class for beginners, but whatever your level of experience, you will find expert instruction, great project ideas and lots of clay to work with. Supplies included. Projects different from camps.

10 weeks $255

Mudworks - 1 Week Teen Intensive Class

Really get down and dirty on the wheel. Learn advanced throwing and trimming techniques including teapot with fitted lid and pulled handle with cups to match! Also work on self designed, hand-built projects when not on the wheel.

M-F July 13 - 17, 1-4 pm and a glazing day TBA. (15 hours total) $195

Limit 6 students (Each student will get approximately 8 hours wheel time)

Drawing & Painting - The Class

Classic drawing and painting! Put brush to canvas and charcoal to paper as you draw from still life, clothed models, and work from your imagination while learning proportion, perspective, composition and expressive mark making. Projects are always stimulating and challenging. Supplies and model fees included.

Photography

This class is designed to first give students a basic understanding of the technical side of the photographic process and the skills to capture what they see.  We’ll cover camera operation and terminology. Then we’ll explore the art and magic of photography through a variety of assignments in a mix of locations with the focus being on composition and creativity. Students must have digital cameras.
