Portfolio Class takes a Field Trip

Cody Fant uses a continuous line to capture
the tree filled garden at Valley House on our field trip
“You grew up here?” an awed parent was asking. “Yes,” I replied. “Come inside and meet my brother, Kevin Vogel, he’s the Director, and he’s real nice.” Jim Hastings and I met our Portfolio class of fifteen kids, aged 13-15, on a perfect sky October morning. We went to visit Bob Stuth-Wade’s current landscape show at Valley House Gallery and Sculpture Garden. Kevin and my sister-in-law Cheryl showed us around the Gallery and introduced us to some gorgeous landscape paintings of different mediums and styles which prepared us well for our drawing excursion in the garden. This time the parents could watch us work! Everyone had a great time avoiding caterpillars and honey bees while creating a BIG continuous line drawing of the garden, culminating in a critique. It was such a treat to romp with students and their families in my favorite place in the world, the Garden at Valley House! Follow this link to learn more about Valley House.(Valleyhouse.com) Be sure and visit there soon. As you can see from the photographs, our students had a very special day. These talented teens are currently finishing their work at Studio Arts.

The Greek Vase Project
Really, it’s our Halloweened-up version of Greek Vases. All those dramatic cartoons on kylixes and kraters of well-dressed, expressive Greeks in action! Our Students did a turn on the potter’s wheel with Lynn Armstrong to create a terra cotta stoneware vase. While those were drying to greenware, each class worked on designs for their pots by practicing drawing modalities to ready their vase painting skills. We started with ‘vase shapes’ - mirroring lines, then ‘upside down drawings’ taken from ancient Greek drawings to create connections between hand/eye/brain, finishing with pattern making instruction for a ‘mock vase’ study using posterboard, colored pencil and India ink. We also learned some Art History while we worked in class! Finally, the coolest part - painting the vases with black underglaze, then using scraffito to scratch out the well-planned designs in the fragile greenware! The kids had a great time with each step, except the upside down drawings at first.... until they turned them over and saw the stunning results! Enjoy our students at work.
